What do you think will be the one issue with most impact on shipping the next year? And possibly the next decade?
The pandemic? A economic crisis? Logistic issues at ports? Rising oIl prices? Cyber attacks? Piracy?
Think again....
(Based on the well-known slogan for the 1992 Clinton election campaign)
In a recent report, it is found that the decarbonisation of shipping has the potential to have the greatest impact on the maritime industry over the next 10 years.
This finding is presented in the Global Maritime Issues Monitor 2021, published this October (link below). In the survey, respondents from six continents highlighted the ‘decarbonisation of shipping’, ‘new environmental regulation’, ‘societal demands for sustainability’, and ‘failure of climate-change mitigation and adoption’ as four of the top 10 issues in terms of potential impact on the maritime industry.
For the first time in the four-year history of the Global Maritime Issues Monitor the decarbonisation of shipping was seen by respondents as the most impactful trend in shipping, followed by new environmental legislation.
The focus in 2021 also indicates a shift back to the pre-pandemic world of 2019, where environmental issues dominated much of the discussion areas in the survey.
However – significantly – where sustainability and environmental issues scored high on impact and likelihood, they scored low on preparedness.
Now is an important time in the shipping industry’s effort to better prepare for decarbonisation and new environmental regulation. We4Sea assists charterers and shipowners to prepare and take necessary actions.
In 2022, We4Sea aims to assist even more charterers and ship owners to become prepared for dealing with issues around decarbonisation in 3 steps.
The first step is to know your current baseline. What is the performance of your fleet? How do your vessels compare to the baseline, or KPI's such as CII, EEXI and similar class vessels?
We do this using a benchmark Digital Twin, a model with the capabilities to compare actual performance of vessels against a benchmark. This helps you to identify underperforming vessels, telling you which vessels to focus on.
Focussing on the 10% lowest performing vessels is the low hanging fruit of our industry. We will tell you which vessels need attention; helping you to focus.
After you have identified these underperforming vessels, you can use the Digital Twin to assess different options. By running a second Digital Twin with a potential modification, like a derated engine, or the installation of a fuel saving device, you can assess the potential fuel saving potential prior to installing it.
Last, you can use a Digital Twin to assess the performance of a modification after it is operational, by comparing historic performance with the current performance, corrected for effects like speed, weather and draught. This is important to assess the impact of your actions and investments.
Using these 3 steps, We4Sea helps charterers and ship owners by collecting unbiased benchmark data, assessing options and checking if they bring the necessary impact.
All with one goal: improve your performance in 2022. And the next years to come.
